Using the traditional Gujarati Bhavai folk theatre form, the film follows a group of lower-caste Harijans migrating through a drought-stricken land. They recount a satirical legend of a king who demands a human sacrifice to fill his stepwell. It is a sharp, stylized critique of the historical and persistent tragedy of untouchability in India.

ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಭೀಕರ ಬರಗಾಲ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ ಬದುಕು ಅರಸಿ ಹೊರಟ ಹರಿಜನ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಜನ, ಇವರ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಗುಜರಾತಿನ 'ಭವಾಯಿ' ಎಂಬ ಜಾನಪದ ಕಲೆಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ದಾರಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಈ ಜನರು ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಜನ ಹಳೆಯ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಸ್ಯಭರಿತವಾಗಿ ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ತನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಬತ್ತಿಹೋದ ಬಾವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ಬರಲು ರಾಜನು ಒಬ್ಬ ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಬಲಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ನಡೆದುಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯತೆಯ ಕ್ರೂರ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಟೀಕಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Ketan Mehta (b.1952, Navsari, Gujarat) is a seminal figure in Indian Parallel Cinema. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and initially worked as a television producer for ISRO. BHAVNI BHAVAI was his feature debut. His filmography includes the internationally acclaimed MIRCH MASALA (1987), SARDAR (1993), and MANGAL PANDEY: THE RISING (2005). He is renowned for blending folk aesthetics with socio-political realism and has received numerous honors.
