Nehma, an Adivasi woman from the Oraon tribe, returns to her village with her children, 12 year-old Dhaanu and 1-year-old Guntu, after her divorce. She begins to work as a data labeller, training the childlike AI models to recognise objects. While Nehma faces the challenge of giving Dhaanu - forever tempted to flee back to the city - a reason to stay, she also notices AI adopting harmful human biases, echoing prejudices against her own community.

ಒರಾನಾ ಬುಡಕಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಆದಿವಾಸಿ ಮಹಿಳೆ ನೆಹ್‌ಮಾ, ತನ್ನ ಗಂಡನ ಜೊತೆ ವಿಚ್ಛೇದನ ಪಡೆದ ನಂತರ ತನ್ನ ಹುಟ್ಟೂರಿಗೆ ವಾಪಸಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಹನ್ನೆರೆಡು ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಮಗ ದಾನು ಹಾಗೂ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನ ಗುಂಟು ಜೊತೆ ನೆಹ್‌ಮಾ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಆ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳು ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವ ಎಐ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಡಾಟಾ ಲೇಬಲರ್‌ ತರಬೇತುದಾರಳಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲಾರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ದಾನು, ಮತ್ತೆ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಒತ್ತಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಈ ಒತ್ತಡದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆ ಹಾನಿಕಾರಕ ಮಾನವ ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತವನ್ನು ಅಳವಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಎಐ ನೆಹ್‌ಮಾಳ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧವೇ ಪೂರ್ವಾಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಆತಂಕಕ್ಕೆ ದೂಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Aranya Sahay

Aranya is an Indian filmmaker based out of Mumbai. Having studied at St. Stephen's College, Aranya went on to study Direction at FTII, Pune. This was soon followed by assisting stints with Imtiaz Ali and Patrick Graham as an Associate Director & Director’s Assistant. Aranya has directed five short films, of which Songs for Babasaheb and Chait have screened at Mumbai IFF, Signs FF and Jaffna FF. In 2021, his film SAAYA was selected as a ‘Film Bazaar Recommends’ project. He was a participant and grant winner in the Museum of Imagined Futures Impact Fellowship Programme in 2023.
