MIRCH MASALA KETAN MEHTA

Subedars (tax collectors) in colonial India traveled from village to village with troops, demanding far more than taxes. When one of these tax collectors sets his gaze on Sonbai, she seeks shelter in a pepper factory, which inevitably leads to the village’s marginalised women speaking up.

ವಸಾಹತುಶಾಹಿ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ತೆರಿಗೆ ವಸೂಲಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಸುಬೇದಾರರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸೈನ್ಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗೆ ಅಲೆದಾಡುತ್ತಾ, ಕೇವಲ ತೆರಿಗೆಯನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನದ್ದನ್ನು ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂತಹ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸುಬೇದಾರನ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಸೋನ್‌ಬಾಯಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಆಕೆ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಖಾರದ ಪುಡಿ ತಯಾರಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ರಯ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಈ ಘಟನೆಯು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ತುಳಿತಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿ ಧ್ವನಿ ಎತ್ತುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Ketan Mehta (b. 1952, Navsari, Gujarat) studied film direction at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He is an Indian director, producer, and screenwriter, making films, documentaries and television series, after serving as a TV producer at ISRO. His key films include BHAVNI BHAVAI (1980), SARDAR (1993), MANGAL PANDEY: THE RISING (2005), and RANG RASIYA (2014). His films feature strong storytelling with allegorical, political undercurrents and humanist, socially aware narratives. His film MIRCH MASALA (1987) won the Best Narrative award at Hawaii IFF and the National Film Award's Golden Lotus for Best Feature Film.
