The film follows the life of a successful film star, revealing her increasing alienation in a role both glamorized and patronized by society. After being forced into show business by her family, she spends her time between studios and disastrous love affairs, and feels more and more dissatisfied.

ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವು ಒಬ್ಬ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಚಿತ್ರನಟಿಯ ಬದುಕಿನ ಸಂಘರ್ಷವನ್ನು ತೆರೆದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಜಗತ್ತು ಆಕೆಯನ್ನು ಒಬ್ಬ ದೊಡ್ಡ ತಾರೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಆರಾಧಿಸಿದರೂ, ಒಳಗಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಗ್ಲಾಮರ್ ಗೊಂಬೆಯಂತೆ ನೋಡುತ್ತದೆ; ಇಂತಹ ಬದುಕಿನ ನಡುವೆ ಆಕೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಿಂದ ತಾನು ದೂರವಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂಬ ಒಂಟಿತನ ಕಾಡತೊಡಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಒತ್ತಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮಣಿದು ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟ ಆಕೆಯ ಜೀವನ ಸ್ಟುಡಿಯೋಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಫಲ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೇ ಕಳೆದುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೊರಗಿನ ವೈಭವದ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಆಕೆ ತನ್ನ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅತೃಪ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ತೀವ್ರ ಬೇಸರವನ್ನೇ ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

Shyam Benegal, (b. 1934 – 2024, Secunderabad) began in advertising before studying at FTII Pune and pioneering parallel cinema. His background encompasses directing over 70 documentaries, teaching at FTII, and producing socially relevant films since the 1970s. Key films include ANKUR (1974), NISHANT (1975), MANTHAN (1976), BHUMIKA (1977), JUNOON (1979), MANDI (1983), and ZUBEIDAA (2001). His themes and style focus on realistic, issue-based narratives tackling rural oppression, women's struggles, and social inequities. He was awarded 18 National Film Awards, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, cementing his legacy as a chronicler of post-Independence India.
