In 1981 Vienna, Perla, an exiled artist and single mother, struggles to support her daughter, Julia, a talented young pianist. When Julia’s father, Andrej, claims to be seriously ill, Perla makes the dangerous journey back to communist Czechoslovakia, only to discover that he wants to force his way back into their lives. Pulled between past and present, Perla begins making reckless choices that jeopardise her future with her daughter.

1981ರ ವಿಯನ್ನಾದಲ್ಲಿ, ವಲಸೆ ಬದುಕು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಲಾವಿದೆಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಒಂಟಿ ತಾಯಿಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಆಗಿರುವ ಪೆರ್ಲಾ, ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ಯುವ ಪಿಯಾನಿಸ್ಟ್ ಆಗಿರುವ ತನ್ನ ಮಗಳು ಜೂಲಿಯಾಳನ್ನು ಪೋಷಿಸಲು ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಜೂಲಿಯಾಳ ತಂದೆ ಆಂದ್ರೇಜ್ ತಾನು ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿ ಅಸ್ವಸ್ಥನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಪೆರ್ಲಾ ಅಪಾಯಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಕಮ್ಯುನಿಸ್ಟ್ ಚೆಕೊಸ್ಲೊವಾಕಿಯಾಗೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಅವರ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಲವಂತವಾಗಿ ನುಗ್ಗಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಆಕೆ ಅರಿಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಭೂತಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ವರ್ತಮಾನದ ನಡುವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿದ ಪೆರ್ಲಾ, ತನ್ನ ಮಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಇರುವ ಭವಿಷ್ಯವನ್ನೇ ಅಪಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಒಡ್ಡುವಂತಹ ಅಜಾಗರೂಕ ಆಯ್ಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

Alexandra Makarová (b. 1985, Czechoslovakia) is a Slovak-Austrian screenwriter and filmmaker from a family of artists with Russian and Greek roots. She moved to Vienna to live with her mother, painter Saša Makarová, and studied screenwriting and directing at Film College Vienna. Her feature debut BREAK MY HEART (2018), portraying Slovak Roma beggars in Vienna, won the Romy Award for Best Production in 2019. Her shorts includes AN EINEM ANDEREN TAG (2011), SOLA (2013). PERLA is her 2nd feature film.
