NATIONALITY: IMMIGRANT NATIONALITÉ IMMIGRÉ SIDNEY SOKHONA

Sidi, a Mauritanian worker living in France, endures the harsh reality faced by many immigrants. Assigned the most dangerous and exhausting jobs, he and his fellow workers are exploited not only by employers but also by middlemen from their own community, who profit through fake work permits and overcrowded, overpriced housing. Confronted daily with racism and economic injustice, the workers gradually begin to unite. What starts as silent endurance turns into collective resistance, as they organize to challenge the system that profits from their vulnerability and demand dignity, rights, and fair treatment.

Sidney Sokhona is a Mauritanian filmmaker born in 1952. He directed his first feature, IMMIGRANT NATIONALITY, between 1972 and 1975 while living in Paris as an immigrant. Blending documentary and fiction, the film features Sokhona himself in the lead role, portraying an immigrant involved in a rent strike on Rue Riquet. Alongside filmmaking, Sokhona is an influential writer and thinker on African cinema, contributing to Cahiers du Cinéma. He argued that Africa’s cinema, like the continent itself, had been colonized, and called for African filmmakers to develop strategies for cinematic independence and political self-representation.
