Set in the final years of British colonial rule in Zanzibar, this coming-of-age political love story follows Denge, a young freedom fighter, whose path crosses with Yasmin- an Indian-Zanzibari woman on her way to an arranged marriage. Their chance meeting sparks an intense bond shaped by desire, fear, and rising resistance. As personal longing collides with the momentum of revolution; love becomes inseparable from politics forcing both to confront the cost of freedom, loyalty, and choice in a society on the edge of change.

Amil Shivji is a Tanzanian filmmaker and lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, with an MFA from York University, Toronto. His work uses cinema to challenge power structures, exposing the realities behind urban development and centering marginalized communities. His short films have screened at Rotterdam and FESPACO, earning awards including People’s Choice in Zanzibar and Best Director in Africa. His feature debut, T-JUNCTION, opened the Zanzibar International Film Festival in 2017, winning three awards. His second feature, TUG OF WAR / VUTA N’KUVUTE, won Best Long Feature at Mashariki and the Oumarou Ganda Prize at FESPACO 2021.
