Set in the 1930s, the film follows a remote village where men devoted to ancestral traditions seek only a quiet, peaceful life. When an evangelical mission establishes a school, pressure mounts on the villagers to build a chapel. As construction stalls, the impatient priest leans on the sacristan and the village chief to assert control. The arrival of a young, progressive teacher and the schoolmaster’s hostility deepen existing tensions, allowing the priest to tighten his grip. The story unfolds as a subtle exploration of power, belief, and the clash between tradition, religion, and colonial authority.

Jean-Michel Tchissoukou was a Congolese filmmaker born in Pointe-Noire in 1942, trained in cinema in Paris at the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel and OCORA, who worked for a decade in Congolese national television before directing the short ILLUSIONS, assisting Sarah Maldoror on SAMBIZANGA, and making the award-winning features LA CHAPELLE, which won a prize at FESPACO in 1981, and M’PONGO / LES LUTTEURS, blending fiction and documentary to explore Congolese culture and identity.
